Gottheimer named founding co-chair of new House Commission on Artificial Intelligence

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer was appointed Tuesday as a founding co-chair of the newly established House Commission on Artificial Intelligence and the Innovation Economy, a Democratic caucus body that will help shape federal policy on emerging technologies.

The commission will be responsible for crafting Democratic legislative priorities on artificial intelligence; educating members on AI’s growing impact on jobs, national security, education, health care, and other sectors; and hosting briefings with industry, academic, and civil society experts to highlight innovation while identifying necessary safeguards.

“From health care to education, the potential for artificial intelligence is boundless. The key for our economy and national security is to stay ahead of the curve — and ahead of our global competitors,” said Gottheimer (D-NJ-5). “As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, and the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on the National Security Agency and Cyber, I see every day just how quickly the landscape is shifting. That’s why this new Commission on AI is critical. We need to ensure Congress is educated on these new technologies, that we’re putting the right policies, legislation, and guardrails in place to grow and protect Americans, and that the U.S. continues to be the leader in AI-fueled jobs and innovation.”

Gottheimer will co-chair the commission alongside Reps. Ted Lieu (D-CA-36) and Valerie Foushee (D-NC-4).

According to projections cited by the congressman, artificial intelligence is expected to add $7 trillion to global GDP over the next decade, with the U.S. economy projected to grow 1.5% by 2035, 3% by 2055, and 3.7% by 2075 due to AI-driven advances. Research indicates productivity and wages could rise across many industries as the technology expands.

At the same time, Gottheimer warned that Congress must address risks to American children, the proliferation of deep fakes, and potential job displacement. He also noted major national security threats, pointing to Chinese AI platforms such as DeepSeek and concerns over China’s semiconductor ambitions.

Previously, Gottheimer has supported bipartisan AI legislation, including the Unleashing AI Innovation in Financial Services Act, the Liquid Cooling for AI Act, the Growing University AI Research for Defense (GUARD) Act, and the Advanced AI Security Readiness Act.
