Route 23 southbound ramp to Hamburg Turnpike closed Saturday, then weekdays next week, for bridge demolition
NEW JERSEY — The Route 23 southbound ramp to Hamburg Turnpike (County Route 694) is scheduled to be closed Saturday and again next week for daytime bridge demolition work as a replacement project advances in West Milford in Passaic County and Kinnelon in Morris County, the New Jersey Department of Transportation said.
The ramp will be closed and detoured from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, and again from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, Jan. 27-30, NJDOT said. The closure is needed for demolition of the existing Route 23 bridge over the Pequannock River and Hamburg Turnpike. Officials said the work is being done during the day to avoid excessive overnight noise that could disturb nearby residents. Route 23 traffic will not be affected, the agency said.
NJDOT said the closure is a continuation of work that began Monday, Jan. 19. Motorists were advised to slow down, use caution and expect minor delays when traveling through the work zone.
During the closure, drivers traveling south on Route 23 who are headed to Hamburg Turnpike/High Crest Road/Bloomingdale will be directed to continue on Route 23 southbound, take the ramp to Kinnelon/Butler, turn left onto Kinnelon Road/County Route 618 (which becomes Kiel Avenue), turn left onto Park Place, then turn right onto Main Street, which becomes Hamburg Turnpike/County Route 694, NJDOT said.
The work is part of the $78.2 million federally funded Route 23 Bridge over Pequannock River/Hamburg Turnpike project between mileposts 16.6 and 17.2 on the border of West Milford in Passaic County and Butler and Kinnelon in Morris County. The project will replace the bridge over the river, Hamburg Turnpike and railroad tracks, and includes drainage and utility improvements, NJDOT said. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2028.
NJDOT said the schedule is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Construction updates and real-time travel information are available at 511nj.org.
