Blocked furnace exhaust triggers carbon monoxide alarm in Sussex County apartment

FRANKLIN BOROUGH, N.J. (Sussex County) — Franklin Borough police and fire officials responded Sunday evening to a carbon monoxide alarm activation at a lower-level apartment building on Mill Street in Franklin Borough.

The Franklin Borough Police Department and Franklin Borough Fire Department were dispatched to 1 Mill St., where firefighters detected low levels of carbon monoxide inside the affected apartment, officials said.

An investigation determined the source of the carbon monoxide was a furnace exhaust pipe that had become blocked by drifting snow. Firefighters cleared the obstruction and ventilated the apartment.

No residents reported symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, and no injuries were reported. Officials said only one apartment was affected by the exhaust blockage.

Authorities reminded residents to keep furnace exhaust vents clear of snow and debris, especially during winter weather, to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
