Local Scout earns Eagle rank with bat roosting project at Merrill Creek Reservoir

HARMONY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Warren County)Merrill Creek Reservoir officials are recognizing Michael Cole of BSA Troop 175 of Port Murray for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and completing a conservation-focused service project at the reservoir.

Cole’s Eagle Scout project involved the construction of a bat roosting structure designed to support local bat populations. The structure is located along the Blue Trail in the open meadow near the shoreline of Quarry Point at Merrill Creek Reservoir.

Officials said the structure provides bats with a safe, warm and dry environment for roosting and establishing maternity colonies, and in some cases, for hibernation. As natural roosting sites are lost or occupied by other wildlife, man-made structures can play a critical role in bat conservation.

The bat roosting structure also offers protection from predators and extreme weather while supporting the survival of several bat species that inhabit the reservoir area, officials said.

Merrill Creek Reservoir thanked Cole, his fellow scouts, and the parents and scout leaders who assisted with the project, calling their efforts an example of environmental stewardship and community service.

Officials said the project helps preserve the natural resources that make Merrill Creek Reservoir unique while promoting awareness of the importance of protecting bat populations.
