Phillipsburg police seek woman wanted on fraud, bad check charges

UPDATE: According to police, Kiffer is in custody.

PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (Warren County) — Phillipsburg police are asking for the public’s help locating a woman wanted on charges related to an alleged fraudulent check passed at a local business.

According to the Phillipsburg Police Department, Mercedes L. Kiffer, 49, is wanted on charges including bad checks, forgery and theft by deception.

Authorities allege that on Aug. 8, 2023, Kiffer passed a check for $891.22 at a Phillipsburg business while knowing the check would not be honored by the issuing account. After the funds were received, the check was later discovered to be fraudulent, police said.

A bench warrant for Kiffer’s arrest was issued Feb. 2, 2026, after she allegedly failed to appear for a scheduled court appearance.

Police described Kiffer as 5 feet 2 inches tall and about 105 pounds, with brown eyes and gray hair.

Her last known addresses include the 600 block of North Law Street in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and the 300 block of Main Street in Slatington, Pennsylvania, according to police.

Kiffer’s current whereabouts are unknown.

Anyone with information about her location is asked to contact the Phillipsburg Police Department at 908-835-2002. Authorities said callers may remain anonymous.
