Hunterdon, Somerset airport upgrades included in $7.3M NJ aviation grant program
NEW JERSEY — Airport improvement projects in Hunterdon and Somerset counties are among those receiving funding through New Jersey’s Fiscal Year 2026 Airport Improvement Program, totaling approximately $7.3 million, state officials announced.
The funding includes more than $6.5 million in state grants and an additional $800,000 in Federal Aviation Administration matching funds to support safety and infrastructure upgrades at 11 airports statewide.
“Airport Improvement Program grants provide funding to make safety improvements at New Jersey’s public-use airports and ensure they are well maintained,” NJDOT Commissioner Priya Jain said. “General aviation airports serve as key economic engines for local communities by providing transportation opportunities for businesses, residents, and visitors.”
In Hunterdon County, Alexandria Field Airport in Franklin Township will receive funding for apron pavement rehabilitation, while Sky Manor Airport in Pittstown Township will undergo a taxiway LED lighting upgrade, including new edge lights, cable and conduit, along with design and construction work.
In Somerset County, Somerset Airport in Bedminster Township will receive funding to rehabilitate Runway 12-30 as part of Phase I construction. Central Jersey Airport in Hillsborough Township will receive funding for obstruction tree trimming as part of a Phase II construction and project management effort.
State officials said the projects are part of a broader effort to enhance safety, modernize infrastructure and support economic activity tied to general aviation airports.
The grants are awarded through a competitive process that prioritizes projects focused on safety improvements, obstruction removal, rehabilitation of existing facilities and capital upgrades. The state covers 90% of eligible project costs, with airport sponsors responsible for the remaining share.
Over the past five years, NJDOT has invested more than $31.7 million in general aviation airports, leveraging an additional $38.1 million in federal funding and $5.2 million from airport owners, for a total of $75 million in aviation infrastructure improvements.
