Leland Street access to Route 202 southbound to close in Raritan Borough

RARITAN BOROUGH, N.J. (Somerset County) — Access between Leland Street and Route 202 southbound in Raritan is set to be permanently closed at 7 a.m. Tuesday as part of an intersection improvement project, transportation officials said.

The closure will allow for utility relocation work. Officials said residential access will be maintained via North Thompson Street, and traffic on Route 202 southbound will not be affected.

The change is part of an $11.4 million federally funded project to improve the intersection of Route 202 and First Avenue in Somerset County.

The project includes widening Route 202 in both directions by removing the grass median to add an auxiliary lane, as well as lengthening and realigning the ramp from Route 202 southbound to First Avenue.

Additional changes include converting Danbury Avenue into a cul-de-sac where it meets Leland Street, incorporating Leland Street into the redesigned exit ramp, and modifying First Avenue westbound to include dedicated turn lanes. Signal timing at the intersection will also be adjusted.

Officials said the improvements are intended to enhance safety, reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

The schedule is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check 511nj.org for real-time travel information.
