READINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon County health officials are warning residents in the Century Road area of Readington Township after a fox tested positive for rabies.
The Hunterdon County Department of Health issued a public health alert this week advising residents who may have come into contact with the wild fox between April 30 and May 12 to seek medical guidance immediately.
Officials said the fox tested positive for rabies May 14.
Residents who may have been exposed were urged to contact their primary care physician or Hunterdon Medical Center’s emergency room to discuss possible exposure and whether post-exposure treatment is necessary.
Health officials also reminded residents not to handle stray or wild animals and warned that saliva from infected animals should be considered infectious.
The county encouraged pet owners to ensure cats, dogs and livestock are vaccinated against rabies through a veterinarian or municipal rabies clinic.
