Vernon HS senior earns NJSIAA scholar-athlete scholarship honor
VERNON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — Vernon Township High School senior Uriah Sacdalan has been recognized through the NJSIAA Annual Scholar-Athlete Program after earning the IBEW Local 102 Scholarship.
The Vernon Township School District announced the honor this week, recognizing Sacdalan for her achievements in academics, athletics and leadership.
Sacdalan competed on the school’s girls wrestling and girls golf teams and was praised by coaches and school officials for her growth, work ethic and dedication.
The NJSIAA Scholar-Athlete Program honors student-athletes across New Jersey who demonstrate excellence in academics, athletics, leadership and character.
Her wrestling coach, Ashley Gocklin, reflected on Sacdalan’s development during her time with the program.
“Over the time I have coached Uriah, I’ve seen tremendous growth both on and off the mat. When she first came out for wrestling, she was very hesitant and unsure of herself or if this sport was even for her, but she pushed through that discomfort and steadily developed into one of the most dependable and important members of our team,” Gocklin said.
“As an athlete, her confidence, technique, and toughness have improved tremendously through hard work and dedication. She’s the kind of wrestler who gives 100% every single day not just to herself but to her teammates as well. She accepts coaching, and does everything that is asked of her without hesitation.”
Gocklin also praised Sacdalan’s leadership and commitment in the classroom and among teammates.
“What stands out even more is her character. She is an excellent student who balances academics and athletics as a multisport athlete at a very high level, and she consistently goes above and beyond for her teammates,” Gocklin said. “She leads by example, encourages others, and is always willing to help however she can. Watching her grow from someone uncertain about joining the sport into a key player and leader on our team has been incredibly rewarding. She has truly earned the respect of both her teammates and coaches through her work ethic, attitude, and commitment.”
School officials congratulated Sacdalan on the accomplishment and said she continues to represent the district with integrity, determination and pride.
