State police increase patrols for Memorial Day weekend travel
NEW JERSEY — The New Jersey State Police will increase traffic enforcement efforts statewide for the Memorial Day holiday weekend as officials urge motorists and boaters to prioritize safety during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, bringing heavier traffic to shore communities, parks, lakes and family gatherings across the state. State police said drivers should remain attentive, avoid distractions, obey speed limits and never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
According to the New Jersey State Police, nine fatal crashes occurred during the 2025 Memorial Day weekend, five of which involved drugs and/or alcohol.
“These tragedies are entirely preventable through responsible planning and safe transportation choices,” officials said.
Motorists are encouraged to arrange for a designated driver, use a taxi or rideshare service such as Uber or Lyft, or stay with friends or family rather than drive impaired.
The increased enforcement initiative will run from Friday, May 22, through Tuesday, May 26. In addition to regularly scheduled patrols, more than 120 troopers will be assigned to targeted traffic enforcement details statewide.
Troopers will focus enforcement efforts on aggressive driving, speeding, seat belt violations, commercial vehicle enforcement, distracted driving, cell phone use and driving while intoxicated.
State police also warned about the dangers of drowsy driving, noting that fatigue can impair judgment, slow reaction times and make it difficult for drivers to remain in their lane.
Drivers who become tired are encouraged to pull into a service area or another safe location to rest before continuing their trip.
Officials also reminded motorists to comply with New Jersey’s Move Over Law, which requires drivers to change lanes when possible or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles, tow trucks or roadside assistance vehicles stopped with flashing lights activated.
“When a lane change cannot be made safely, drivers must slow to a speed below the posted limit and proceed with caution,” state police said.
The New Jersey State Police Marine Bureau will also increase patrols on waterways throughout the holiday weekend and summer season, focusing on impaired boating, reckless operation of boats and personal watercraft, and boating safety compliance.
Troopers will verify that operators possess the proper licenses and certifications required to operate watercraft legally. Additional boating safety information and licensing requirements are available through the New Jersey State Police Marine Services website.
“As we head into the Memorial Day weekend, I urge everyone to make safety a priority—on our roadways and waterways alike. A moment of attentiveness, a responsible decision, or a simple precaution can mean the difference between tragedy and a safe return home,” said Jeanne Hengemuhle, acting superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. “With increased holiday travel across New Jersey, the risk for serious crashes and preventable incidents also rises. We ask motorists and boaters to remain alert, avoid distractions, and practice safe, responsible behavior throughout the holiday weekend. Together, we can help ensure a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day for all. On behalf of the New Jersey State Police, I wish everyone a safe and meaningful holiday weekend. As we enjoy this time with family and friends, let us also pause to remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.”
