Hiker with broken leg rescued after lengthy operation at Hunterdon County park

WEST AMWELL TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — A hiker with a broken leg was rescued Saturday afternoon from a wooded trail at Washington Overlook Park following a lengthy operation involving the West Amwell Fire Company and several mutual aid agencies.

Emergency crews were dispatched at 1:16 p.m. for a report of a person injured in a fall along a park trail. Rescue operations were initiated upon arrival.

Firefighters and basic life support personnel hiked approximately 1.5 miles into the trail system before locating the injured hiker. Responders determined the patient had suffered a broken leg.

As crews packaged the patient for transport, additional firefighters and mutual aid personnel entered the wooded area to assist with the rescue. An off-road utility vehicle was brought into the woods, and crews cleared several fallen trees to create a path for the vehicle.

Additional responders joined the rescue effort, and firefighters carried the patient approximately 200 yards through dense vegetation and over downed trees before reaching the utility vehicle. The patient was then transported from the woods to awaiting basic life support units.

All firefighters, emergency medical personnel and mutual aid responders safely exited the wooded area, and all units cleared the scene following the rescue.
