
Man airlifted, residents displaced after Warren County fire
WASHINGTON BOROUGH, N.J. (Warren County) — A 42-year-old Washington Borough man was airlifted to a hospital Monday afternoon after suffering burn injuries in a fire on East Washington Avenue that displaced multiple residents and affected two local businesses, authorities said.
Emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 1:36 p.m. to the area of 45 E. Washington Ave. in Washington Borough for a report of a man whose clothing was on fire. Dispatchers also received reports of smoke in the area and a possible structure fire.
Upon arrival, officers located the injured man, who had been inside his apartment when the fire occurred. He was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel before being flown to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
Police assisted with traffic control and the evacuation of nearby businesses as firefighters worked to bring the fire under control.
A preliminary investigation conducted by the Washington Township Police Department, the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office and the Washington Borough Fire Marshal’s Office found no suspicious circumstances, authorities said. The fire remains under investigation.
Multiple fire departments, emergency medical agencies and specialized response teams responded to assist with firefighting, medical care and hazardous materials operations.
The fire displaced several residents, according to authorities. The American Red Cross said it provided emergency assistance to a family of two, including temporary lodging, food, clothing and other immediate needs. Disaster health and mental health services also were made available.
The Washington Business Improvement District said the fire affected two local businesses and displaced multiple borough residents. In a statement, the organization thanked first responders and community members who assisted during the incident and said additional information about assistance for affected families and businesses will be released as it becomes available.
