Overnight lane closures planned on I-287 in Morris County for bridge replacement project
MORRIS COUNTY, N.J. — Motorists traveling on Interstate 287 in Morris County should expect overnight lane closures this weekend as work continues on a federally funded bridge replacement project in Hanover and Morris Township, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
Two southbound lanes on I-287 are scheduled to close beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, June 26, through 9 a.m. Saturday, June 27, to allow crews to restripe the roadway, install construction barriers and shift traffic beneath the Hanover Avenue Bridge between mileposts 37.6 and 37.2. At least two travel lanes will remain open throughout the work.
By Saturday morning, all southbound lanes are expected to reopen, with traffic shifted toward the median. The right shoulder beneath the bridge will remain closed through November 2027 while crews complete bridge abutment repairs and other improvements.
A similar traffic pattern will be implemented on the northbound side beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 27, through 9 a.m. Sunday, June 28. Two northbound lanes will be closed overnight between mileposts 37.2 and 37.6 while crews restripe the roadway and install barriers for a long-term right shoulder closure. At least two lanes will remain open during construction.
When work is completed Sunday morning, all northbound lanes will reopen, with traffic shifted to the left toward the median. The right shoulder is expected to remain closed through November 2027.
NJDOT is advising motorists to slow down, use caution and expect delays while traveling through the work zones.
The lane closures are part of a $17.5 million federally funded project to replace the concrete bridge deck on the Hanover Avenue (County Route 650) bridge over I-287 in Hanover and Morris Township.
In addition to replacing the bridge deck, the project includes drainage, lighting, signage and fencing improvements, along with new sidewalks and upgraded curb ramps that meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2028.
NJDOT noted that the timing of the work is subject to change because of weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Motorists can find construction updates and real-time traffic information by visiting 511nj.org.
