Gottheimer unveils Summer Safety Plan ahead of July Fourth holiday

TEANECK, N.J. (Bergen County) — U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-5th District, unveiled a “Summer Safety Plan” on Thursday, outlining initiatives aimed at improving pool safety, promoting sun protection and increasing awareness of grill safety ahead of the Fourth of July holiday and America’s 250th anniversary.

Speaking at the Teaneck Community Pool, Gottheimer highlighted several federal proposals designed to reduce injuries and deaths during the busy summer season.

“A massive heat wave is coming to Jersey for this Fourth of July weekend. There is nothing partisan about keeping our families safe this summer — whether it’s at the pool, in the sun, or at the grill,” Gottheimer said. “These are commonsense steps, and I’m going to keep fighting to get them done.”

As part of the plan, Gottheimer said he is working with municipalities, counties and the state to encourage applications for the federal Pool Safely Grant Program, which provides up to $4 million annually for projects such as drain covers, fencing, lifeguard training, inspections and swim lessons. Applications for the program close July 13.

According to Gottheimer’s office, New Jersey has never received funding through the grant program.

The congressman is also co-leading the bipartisan Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Reauthorization Act, which would continue federal efforts to strengthen pool safety standards and prevent drownings.

According to Gottheimer’s office, an average of 65 people drown each year in New Jersey, including about 10 children younger than 15. Nationally, approximately 4,000 people die annually from unintentional drowning, which remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4.

On sun safety, Gottheimer announced he is sending a letter to New Jersey officials urging expanded public education campaigns and clearer guidance on sunscreen use. He recommended using sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapplying every two hours, or more often while swimming.

His office said roughly 1,700 men and 840 women in New Jersey are diagnosed with melanoma each year, while only about 30% of women and 15% of men regularly use sunscreen.

Gottheimer also highlighted grill safety, noting that an average of 21,682 Americans are treated annually in emergency rooms for grill-related injuries and that grills cause an estimated 11,421 home fires each year.

He is co-sponsoring the bipartisan Strengthening Awareness and Funding Education for Grilling (SAFE Grilling) Act with Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., which would direct the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to launch a national public awareness campaign on grill safety, including hazards involving gas leaks, burns and wire grill brushes.

Gottheimer said the Summer Safety Plan builds on previous efforts, including support for legislation to streamline the federal review of sunscreen ingredients and his work as a member of the Congressional Children’s Safety Caucus.
