New Jersey State Police urge boaters to stay sober, wear life jackets and slow down on the water
NEW JERSEY — The New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau is reminding boaters to make safety a priority this summer, urging operators to avoid alcohol, wear life jackets and remain alert while on the water.
The bureau warned that boating under the influence significantly increases the risk of crashes by slowing reaction time and impairing judgment.
State Police encourage boaters to designate a sober operator before leaving the dock and never operate a vessel while impaired.
Troopers also reminded boaters to obey speed limits and be mindful of their wake, noting that excessive speed and careless operation can damage property, capsize smaller boats and injure other people on the water.
The Marine Services Bureau said nighttime boating requires additional caution because reduced visibility makes it more difficult to judge distances, speeds and potential hazards. Boaters should maintain a safe speed, use proper navigation lights and remain alert for other vessels and floating debris.
State Police also emphasized the importance of wearing a properly fitted personal flotation device, noting that most boating fatalities involve people who were not wearing a life jacket.
The bureau urged boaters to stay focused while operating a vessel by avoiding distractions such as cell phones, scanning for hazards and keeping a dedicated lookout.
“Safe boating starts with you!” the New Jersey State Police said.
