DENVILLE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — The Denville Police Department and Denville Township PBA Local 142 are mourning the loss of Mac, the department’s therapy K-9, who died Friday after recently being diagnosed with cancer.
According to the PBA, Mac died at 2:35 p.m. Friday after “the difficult decision was made to let Mac rest peacefully.” He was surrounded by members of his Denville Police family.
Mac served as the department’s therapy dog, providing comfort and emotional support to police officers, department staff and members of the community.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Mac,” the Denville Police Department said in a statement.
“Although Mac was only with us for a short time, the impact he made was immeasurable. He brought comfort, smiles, and moments of calm to our officers, staff, and members of our community. His gentle presence reminded us all of the healing power of kindness and companionship.”
The department also thanked Animal Control Officer Petrillo for her dedication to Mac.
“We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Animal Control Officer Petrillo, whose dedication, compassion, and tireless efforts gave Mac a loving home and the opportunity to touch so many lives. Her commitment to his care and well-being made all the difference.”
The PBA said Mac was “far more than a therapy dog,” noting he supported officers after difficult calls, comforted community members and brightened countless days with his gentle presence.
“Mac may have been with us for only a brief chapter, but his paw prints will remain on our hearts forever,” the police department said.
“Rest easy, Mac. You will be deeply missed.”
The PBA added that Mac’s legacy will continue to be remembered.
“Run free, Mac. Thank you for your unwavering love, loyalty, and service. You will always be a cherished member of the Denville Police family and will remain in our hearts forever.”
