Washington Township honors retiring police captain after 27 years of service

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Warren County) — The Washington Township Police Department is honoring Captain John Kaufmann as he retires after 27 years of distinguished service, officials announced Friday.

Captain Kaufmann, widely known as the “Face of Washington,” spent nearly three decades serving the township with professionalism, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to community engagement.

“Captain Kaufmann never missed an opportunity to connect with residents, support local businesses, or pause for a photo with his trademark glowing smile,” the department said in a statement. “His presence, work ethic, and genuine care for others have left a lasting impact.”

Highly respected within the department and beloved by the public, Kaufmann was praised for both his leadership and approachability. His retirement marks the end of a significant chapter for the agency.

“We thank Captain Kaufmann for his exceptional service and wish him the very best in his well-earned retirement,” the statement read.
