St. Luke’s University Health Network will open its new St. Luke’s Heart Hospital at the Anderson Campus in October, marking the largest construction project in the health system’s more than 150-year history.
The $252 million, five-story facility encompasses approximately 355,000 square feet and adds 140 beds, nearly doubling the size of the Anderson Campus. Construction began in 2024.
According to St. Luke’s, the new hospital will provide comprehensive cardiovascular care in a single location, featuring four dedicated heart operating rooms, one hybrid operating room and 10 interventional suites for cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology and interventional radiology.
The facility will also include a specialized cardiac intensive care unit designed to care for high-acuity heart patients.
Hospital officials said the Heart Hospital is equipped with advanced medical technology, including new imaging systems, heart-lung machines used during open-heart surgery and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machines that provide long-term heart and lung support for critically ill patients.
St. Luke’s said the project, constructed entirely with American steel, employed hundreds of skilled workers during construction and will support hundreds of permanent healthcare jobs once fully operational.
The hospital also expands the health network’s educational mission by adding teaching space and establishing a new cardiac fellowship program. Design features include internal service corridors intended to improve staff workflow, as well as a rooftop helipad and a larger cafeteria to enhance services across the Anderson Campus.
Located on a 500-acre campus overlooking the Lehigh River, St. Luke’s Anderson Campus opened in 2011 as Pennsylvania’s first new full-service acute-care hospital in four decades.
Since then, the campus has expanded with the addition of a Specialty Pavilion in 2017 and the Women & Babies Pavilion in 2020. The new Heart Hospital represents the latest expansion of the campus as St. Luke’s continues to grow its cardiovascular services in the region.
