FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The chief financial officer for Franklin Township has been charged with theft by deception following an investigation into an alleged payroll double-billing scheme, Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renée M. Robeson announced.
Cameron T. Keng, 39, of Fort Lee, was arrested Aug. 4 by detectives from the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office and charged with one count of third-degree theft by deception.
According to the prosecutor’s office, Unity Bank launched an internal investigation in June into payroll fee transactions involving Franklin Township. During the investigation, the bank identified what authorities described as an alleged double-billing scheme and reported its findings to the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Keng was represented at his initial appearance by Jada Mayson, Esq., and was released pending further court proceedings. He is scheduled to appear before Superior Court Judge Christopher J. Garrenger for a pre-indictment conference on Sept. 14.
A third-degree conviction in New Jersey is punishable by three to five years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000.
