HOPATCONG BOROUGH, N.J. (Sussex County) — An oil spill reported in the Byram Bay area of Hopatcong over the weekend was immediately contained and appears to have had minimal to no impact on Lake Hopatcong, according to the borough.
The spill occurred Saturday, Aug. 22, according to a public notice issued by the Borough of Hopatcong.
After officials were notified, the Hopatcong Police Department, Sussex County Office of Emergency Management and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection were notified and responded to investigate.
The borough said the spill was contained immediately.
“Due to the prompt response and mitigation efforts, there appears to have been minimal to no impact to Lake Hopatcong,” the borough said in the notice.
Additional remediation and safety measures were scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 25, to ensure the area is properly addressed and remains safe.
The borough said it will provide additional information as it becomes available.
