Raritan Township launches community solar program offering JCP&L customers savings on solar credits

RARITAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Raritan Township has partnered with Solar Simplified to offer a community solar program that officials say will allow participating Jersey Central Power & Light customers to save 35% on applied solar credits without installing solar panels on their property.

The voluntary program is regulated by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and is available to both homeowners and renters, according to the township.

Community solar allows customers to subscribe to a portion of a local solar project. As the project generates electricity, solar credits are applied directly to the subscriber’s JCP&L bill.

Participants will receive a 35% discount on the value of the solar credits applied to their bills, according to the township. Customers will continue to receive and pay a single monthly bill from JCP&L.

There are no enrollment fees, credit checks, rooftop installations or long-term commitments, officials said.

“The Township Committee is always focused on finding tangible ways to respect our residents’ hard-earned dollars and bring real savings to Raritan Township families,” said Mayor Brad Perry. “Through this State-regulated program, we are providing our community with a secure, trusted way to save as much as 35 percent on their monthly electric bills without any upfront fees, long-term contracts, or rooftop installations. It is a practical, dollars-and-cents win for our homeowners and renters alike.”

Because the program does not require rooftop panels, it is available to renters, residents of multifamily buildings and homeowners whose properties may not be suitable for their own solar installations.

Solar Simplified is a registered subscriber organization with the NJBPU. At least 51% of the available community solar capacity will be reserved for low- and moderate-income households, with Solar Simplified responsible for confirming eligibility during enrollment.

The township selected Solar Simplified to administer the program and handle enrollment, customer support and billing questions. According to the township, more than 100 municipalities and community organizations nationwide partner with the company.

Officials also cautioned residents that Solar Simplified does not conduct door-to-door sales. Anyone approached at home by a person claiming to represent the program is advised to contact Solar Simplified or Raritan Township before providing any information.
