NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — A Philadelphia man has been sentenced to three years in New Jersey State Prison after pleading guilty to unlawfully possessing a handgun in Sussex Borough, according to the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Andrew J. Deleon, 32, was sentenced Sept. 9 by Superior Court Judge Stuart A. Minkowitz on a second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun charge, Sussex County Prosecutor Daniel M. Perez announced.
The charge stemmed from a Feb. 6, 2024, domestic disturbance in Sussex Borough that prompted a response from New Jersey State Police.
State police found Deleon in possession of a handgun while in public without a valid New Jersey permit to carry a handgun, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Deleon pleaded guilty June 4, 2024, to an accusation charging him with second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun. During his plea, Deleon admitted to possessing a handgun on a public street without a valid New Jersey permit to carry, prosecutors said.
Minkowitz sentenced Deleon to three years in state prison with one year of parole ineligibility. Deleon received credit for 132 days served in the Morris County Jail.
He was also ordered to submit a DNA sample and pay $155 in court costs and fines.
