MORRISTOWN, N.J. (Morris County) — A free expungement clinic will be held in Morristown on Sept. 24, offering people an opportunity to speak with attorneys about potentially clearing certain convictions from their criminal records.
The second Morris County Free Expungement Clinic will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 10 Martin Luther King Ave. No appointment is required.
Those who wish to sign up in advance may do so using the online registration link.
Attendees will be able to meet with an attorney to determine whether certain nonviolent convictions may be eligible for expungement. The legal assistance will be provided at no cost.
Morris County Prosecutor Robert Carroll thanked the Rev. Jerry M. Carter Jr., pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, for supporting and hosting the event.
“For those who have managed to turn their lives around after becoming involved with the criminal justice system, you can learn more about the process of expungement at this free clinic. Obtaining an expungement could be a means of creating a better future for yourself, your loved ones, and your community,” Carroll said.
Morris County Deputy Public Defender Brian Kenney said the clinic is intended to help eligible residents navigate the expungement process.
“Expungement can open doors to employment, housing and other opportunities, and helping people access that relief takes collaboration. We’re proud to work alongside the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the Morris County Bar Association and the other partners and volunteer attorneys who are coming together to provide free legal assistance and help eligible residents clear their records and move forward,” Kenney said.
Those planning to speak with an attorney are encouraged to bring any information they have about the case they are seeking to address. If they do not have the information, organizers said it can be retrieved electronically at the clinic.
Staff from the Morris County Sheriff’s Office will also be available to provide information about free Narcan, substance use and mental health services, social service benefits, re-entry services and voter registration.
The clinic is a partnership involving the Morris County Bar Association, Morris County Bar Foundation, Morris County Office of the Public Defender, New Jersey Office of the Public Defender, Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, Morris County Sheriff’s Office and Calvary Baptist Church.
