MORRIS PLAINS BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — Police in Morris Plains are urging parents and guardians to speak with their children about a dangerous viral trend involving late-night “door-kicking” pranks.
The Morris Plains Police Department issued the warning to families in the borough and surrounding communities, saying what children and teenagers may view as a harmless prank or social media stunt could create a dangerous situation.
Police said a homeowner hearing a loud crash against their front door late at night may believe someone is attempting to break into the home, particularly amid concerns about home invasion burglaries in New Jersey.
“A split second decision to defend a scared family could result in a catastrophe,” police said.
The department urged anyone participating in the late-night door-kicking incidents to stop immediately.
“What feels like a game to a group of friends looks entirely like a violent felony to the family on the other side of the door,” police said.
Police also warned that law enforcement could investigate reports, identify those responsible and pursue charges.
The department encouraged parents and guardians to talk with their children about the potential consequences of participating in the trend.
“Talk to your kids tonight. Make sure they understand that a prank is never worth the possible consequences,” police said.
