I-78 westbound ramp reopens in Somerset County following $6.1 million bridge replacement project

WARREN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — The ramp from King George Road southbound to Interstate 78 westbound in Somerset County reopened Monday afternoon, marking the completion of a $6.1 million bridge replacement project, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).

The ramp reopened Oct. 12 after crews completed the final work on the I-78 westbound bridge over a tributary of the Dead River in Warren Township.

According to NJDOT, reopening the entrance ramp and acceleration lane from King George Road southbound was the last remaining portion of the project.

All three westbound lanes of I-78 had previously been shifted back to their original traffic configuration Sept. 4, following construction of the new bridge.

The federally funded project involved replacing the bridge’s superstructure and deck, upgrading guiderails and repaving a section of the highway.

NJDOT said crews used precast deck panels to reduce construction time and minimize disruptions to motorists. All three lanes of I-78 remained open throughout most of the construction.

With the ramp reopened and traffic restored to its original configuration, the bridge replacement project is now complete.

The project is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to maintain and improve New Jersey’s transportation infrastructure, including roads and bridges used by motorists and commercial vehicles.
