AAA forecasts record 22.4 million Americans will take ocean cruises in 2027

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A record 22.4 million Americans are expected to take ocean cruises in 2027, marking the fifth consecutive year of projected growth as travelers continue to seek convenient vacation options, according to a new forecast from AAA.

In a report released Oct. 20, AAA projected that 22.4 million U.S. residents will take domestic and international ocean cruises next year, a 3.6% increase over 2026. The organization also expects this year’s passenger totals to exceed earlier projections as demand for cruise vacations continues to rise.

AAA attributed the growing popularity of cruising to its convenience, value and variety, with travelers increasingly drawn to vacations that combine transportation, accommodations, meals and entertainment.

“Cruising offers a unique type of vacation because you unpack once and visit multiple destinations with meals and entertainment included,” said Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel. “The key is finding the right cruise that meets your needs, and that’s where travel agents come in. Working with an advisor ensures you’re booking a ship with amenities and activities that fit your interests and lifestyle.”

According to AAA, demand for ocean cruises has increased steadily since 2023, when passenger numbers surpassed pre-pandemic levels. In 2019, approximately 14.2 million Americans took ocean cruises, compared with the projected 22.4 million in 2027, representing a 57% increase.

The organization said travelers are increasingly prioritizing shared experiences with family and friends while also appreciating the ability to estimate vacation expenses before departure. More than 90% of U.S. cruise passengers rate their experiences as good or very good, according to AAA, while 93% book another cruise, contributing to strong repeat business throughout the industry.

The Caribbean remains the most popular destination for American cruise passengers, accounting for 71% of U.S. cruise travel. AAA said cruise lines have invested heavily in private islands throughout the Caribbean, offering passengers exclusive destinations and additional amenities.

Companies have also deployed larger ships in the region, including vessels capable of carrying at least 4,500 passengers, with expanded entertainment, dining and recreational options. The Caribbean’s proximity to major U.S. cruise ports also contributes to its popularity, with the world’s three busiest cruise ports located in Florida: Miami, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale.

While seven-night cruises remain the most popular option, AAA reported that shorter itineraries are attracting a growing share of American travelers. In 2025, 45% of U.S. ocean cruise passengers booked trips lasting six nights or fewer, compared with 39% in 2019.

AAA said shorter cruises appeal to travelers who want to enjoy a vacation without taking an entire week away from work, school or other responsibilities.

The organization recommends booking cruises early, particularly for popular itineraries and cabin categories that may sell out. Travelers considering Alaska cruises are encouraged to begin planning even earlier because of the region’s shorter sailing season and limited availability. AAA also advises passengers to download their cruise line’s mobile app before departure to become familiar with onboard services and features.

For travelers flying to their departure port, AAA recommends arriving in the port city a day before the scheduled cruise to allow additional time in case of flight delays or cancellations. Passengers booking shorter cruises are encouraged to reserve shore excursions, specialty dining and spa treatments in advance to make the most of their limited time onboard.

AAA also recommends bringing items such as sunscreen, snacks and other necessities from home to avoid potentially higher onboard prices.

The organization said travel advisers can help passengers compare cruise lines, destinations, itineraries and cabin options while identifying available promotions, onboard credits and other benefits. Travel advisers may also assist with coordinating milestone celebrations and multigenerational vacations, which can involve more complicated travel arrangements.

AAA recommends that passengers review travel insurance options before departure, noting that coverage and exclusions vary among policies.

The 2027 cruise forecast was prepared by Tourism Economics in cooperation with AAA. The analysis incorporates scheduled itineraries covering virtually all major cruise vessels, economic projections and trends in the travel industry.

The forecast also uses cruise industry data from Tourism Economics’ Cruise Intelligence Platform, economic forecasts from Oxford Economics and assumptions about future tourism activity. AAA said its passenger projections include ocean cruises taken by U.S. residents departing from both domestic and international ports.
