Assemblywoman Aura Dunn: Another significant void discovered on I-80 eastbound in Wharton Borough, repairs expected to take at least three weeks

WHARTON BOROUGH, NJ (Morris County) – Assemblywoman Aura Dunn (R-Morris) received an update on Monday regarding the ongoing repairs to the sinkhole on I-80 eastbound in Wharton Borough, revealing that additional structural issues have been identified, requiring further work to stabilize the roadway and ensure long-term safety.

Crews from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) are working around the clock, with drilling locations already established. Of the 15 drilling sites identified, 11 have been drilled, and 4 have been filled. Over the weekend, another significant void was discovered, and efforts are underway to address it. Given the complexity of the repairs and weather conditions, officials estimate the repairs will take at least three more weeks to complete.

“I understand the concerns regarding the integrity of this major corridor,” Dunn said. “Safe, reliable infrastructure is not a luxury, it is a necessity. I appreciate NJDOT’s transparency and commitment to safety as this work progresses.”

Dunn encouraged commuters to plan ahead and check 511nj.org for real-time updates on the ongoing work.

“I will continue monitoring the situation and advocating for the resources needed to get this done right,” she assured. “Safe travels!”
