Authorities identify swimmer who died in Morris County pond

MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office has identified the swimmer who died Saturday evening after struggling in Jones Pond as 18-year-old Hillario Manuel Mendez-Vincente of Morristown.

Authorities said a witness called 911 at approximately 6:28 p.m. on July 4 after seeing Mendez-Vincente enter Jones Pond and struggle while swimming.

First responders responded to the scene and searched the pond before locating Mendez-Vincente submerged in the water. He was recovered from the pond, authorities said.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted by the Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause and manner of death.

Authorities said no foul play is suspected.

The incident remains under investigation by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and the Morris Township Police Department.
