Authorities identify victim in apparent drowning at Cedar Lake Beach in Morris County

DENVILLE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Authorities have identified the woman who died in an apparent drowning at Cedar Lake Beach in Denville Township as Alexis Velez, 33, of Mount Arlington Borough, according to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.

The incident occurred on Sunday, July 13. Emergency medical services and fire crews responded to the beach around 5:50 p.m. after receiving a report of a possible drowning. Other swimmers had noticed Velez unresponsive in the water and called 911, said Meghan Knab, public information officer for the Prosecutor’s Office.

Velez had been swimming in a location where other swimmers were present before being found unresponsive. She was pulled from the water, and emergency responders transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted by the Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office. At this time, no foul play is suspected.

The incident remains under investigation by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and the Denville Police Department.
