FRANKFORD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — A bobcat that found its way into a chicken coop in Frankford Township last week was safely removed and released back into its natural surroundings, according to the Wantage Township Animal Shelter.
New Jersey State Police dispatched Wantage Township Animal Control to a Frankford Township residence after the bobcat became trapped inside the coop. Wantage provides animal control services to Frankford through a shared services agreement.
The animal shelter said the bobcat appeared healthy and uninjured but was having difficulty finding its way out of the coop.
Animal Control Officer Monastra safely contained the bobcat with a net before releasing it outside the chicken coop, allowing it to return to its natural surroundings.
Bobcats are native to New Jersey and are listed as an endangered species in the state, according to the animal shelter. Residents who encounter a deceased, injured or orphaned bobcat are encouraged to contact New Jersey Fish & Game.
Wantage Township Animal Control said it has previously worked with state bobcat biologists and Last Resort Rescue on local cases involving injured and orphaned bobcats.
The shelter advised residents who encounter wildlife that appears injured, orphaned, trapped or in distress to contact their local animal control agency for guidance.
