Budd Lake man charged after alleged fraudulent use of misplaced bank card in Hackettstown

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Warren County) — A Morris County man was arrested after police said he used a misplaced bank card to make unauthorized purchases following an incident at a Hackettstown convenience store.

Hackettstown police arrested Richard Exner, 39, of Budd Lake, on April 7 in connection with the investigation.

According to police, officers responded at approximately 12:15 p.m. to QuickChek, located at 134 Mountain Ave., following a report involving a possible theft connected to a misplaced bank card.

Investigators determined a customer accidentally left her TD Bank card at the store March 27, police said.

Store management secured the card in the store safe, according to authorities.

However, when the customer retrieved the card April 1, she discovered several unauthorized transactions, including purchases from eBay and Bowling.com, police said.

Through a review of financial records and additional investigation, detectives identified Exner as a suspect, authorities said.

Police said detectives later contacted Exner, who allegedly admitted to making several of the unauthorized purchases.

Exner was charged with theft by taking a credit card and fraudulent use of a credit card. He was processed and released pending a court appearance.
