Congressman Kean touts SALT relief, child tax credit boost after House passes reconciliation package

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday passed a sweeping reconciliation package that includes middle-class tax relief, healthcare protections, border security investments, and support for law enforcement—measures Congressman Tom Kean Jr. (R-N.J.-7) said are wins for New Jersey families.

Kean, who said he played a leading role in shaping the bill, highlighted the restoration of the full state and local tax (SALT) deduction for middle-income earners. The legislation raises the SALT deduction cap to $40,000.

“I stood up for New Jersey every step of the way, even when it meant standing alone or standing against my own party’s leadership,” Kean said in a statement. “We did it.”

Kean also cited key healthcare provisions in the bill, including measures to preserve Medicaid access for eligible recipients while preventing fraud, and boosting the Child Tax Credit to $2,500.

Additional highlights of the bill include:

  • Secret Service reimbursement for local and state law enforcement protecting former President Donald Trump at his Bedminster residence.
  • Border security funding to support patrol agents and stop illegal drug trafficking.
  • Increased energy independence, encouraging domestic production.
  • Pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) reform to lower prescription drug costs.
  • “Doc fix” legislation addressing physician reimbursements under Medicare.
  • Passage of the Orphan Cures Act, aimed at accelerating treatment development for rare diseases.
  • $12.5 billion for air traffic control modernization, enhancing safety and staffing nationwide.

Kean said the package reflects a commitment to affordability, efficiency, and accountability. “This bill lays the foundation for a stronger, more affordable America for middle-class families in the Seventh District,” he said. “But the fight doesn’t stop here.”

The bill now heads to the U.S. Senate, and Kean pledged to continue advocating for its passage.
