
Cop, EMS save 33-year-old man’s life after arm cut by lawnmower in Somerset County
PEAPACK & GLADSTONE BOROUGH, NJ (Somerset County) – A Cop and EMS members saved a man’s life after his arm was cut by a zero turn walk behind lawnmower in Peapack & Gladstone Borough.
On Wednesday, May 8, at 3:15 p.m., Detective Nicholas Ortiz responded to the area of Mosle Road and South Street for the report of a landscaper who had cut his arm with a zero turn walk behind lawnmower, police said.
Upon the arrival of Detective Ortiz, he located a 33-year-old Far Hills man bleeding heavily from his right arm and suffering from a severe traumatic laceration to his right forearm, police said.
Detective Ortiz quickly assessed the patient and determined the need for a tourniquet. He applied a department issued tourniquet to the victim’s right arm and applied additional pressure to stop the bleeding, police said.
Peapack – Gladstone First Aid & Rescue Squad members arrived to further administer life saving measures to the man, police said.
The man was then flown to University Hospital in Newark.
“Through the quick assessment and actions of Detective Ortiz and the members of the Peapack – Gladstone First Aid Squad the victim’s life was saved,” police said.
“All officers of the Peapack & Gladstone Police Department receive training in injury assessment, hemorrhage control and application of tourniquets for severe arterial injury. All officers are equipped with either a SOF tactical tourniquet or Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT),” police said.
