Daytime fireball streaks across Northeast skies, seen in New Jersey and surrounding states

NEW JERSEY — A bright daytime fireball was spotted across several Northeast states Tuesday afternoon, drawing hundreds of eyewitness reports.

The meteor was seen at approximately 2:34 p.m. EDT by observers in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, according to reported data.

The fireball first became visible about 48 miles above the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Mastic Beach on Long Island. Traveling southwest at an estimated 30,000 mph, it covered roughly 117 miles through the upper atmosphere before disintegrating about 27 miles above Galloway, near Atlantic City.

Approximately 260 sightings were reported across the region, according to the American Meteor Society.
