Daytime shoulder, lane closures begin on I-287 and Hanover Avenue in Morris County
MORRIS COUNTY, N.J. — Daytime shoulder closures on Interstate 287 and lane closures on Hanover Avenue are set to begin Thursday in Hanover Township and Morris Township as work gets underway on a bridge replacement project, transportation officials said.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation said shoulder closures are scheduled on I-287 northbound and southbound from milepost 37.26 to milepost 37.56, near the Hanover Avenue/County Route 650 bridge, beginning Thursday, Jan. 29. The closures will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday and will continue Monday through Friday during the same hours for the next several weeks.
In addition, single-lane closures are scheduled on Hanover Avenue/CR 650 eastbound and westbound on the bridge over I-287 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with weekday closures continuing into next week and for several weeks thereafter.
Officials said the closures are needed to clear snow, install construction signage and perform surveillance work in preparation for a bridge replacement project. Work will be conducted as a moving operation on both roadways.
Motorists traveling through the area are advised to slow down, use caution and expect delays.
The work is part of a $17.5 million federally funded project to replace the concrete bridge deck on the Hanover Avenue/CR 650 bridge over I-287 in Hanover and Morris Township. The project also includes drainage, lighting, signage and fencing improvements, as well as sidewalk replacements and curb ramp upgrades to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2028. Officials noted that the schedule is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
Drivers are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website at 511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
