Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area’s Milford Star to shine again July 3

DELAWARE WATER GAP NATIONAL RECREATION AREA — The historic Milford Star will once again illuminate the night sky beginning July 3 after a community-led effort restored the landmark atop Milford Knob in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

The star, a familiar feature of the local landscape for more than 100 years, was removed in 2017. A grassroots “Restore the Star” campaign raised awareness and funding to return the landmark to its perch overlooking the Milford area.

“For generations, this star has been a beacon for the surrounding area,” said Eamon Leighty, superintendent of Delaware Water Gap. “We are grateful to all those who helped bring the glow back in time to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, including park partners and community leaders, such as Pike County Commissioner Matt Osterberg.”

Community volunteers will help light and maintain the star, preserving what park officials describe as an enduring symbol of local heritage and community pride.

The relighting coincides with the nation’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence. The National Park Service is leading commemorative efforts nationwide under Executive Order 14189, which calls for “a grand celebration worthy of the momentous occasion of the 250th anniversary of American Independence on July 4, 2026.”

National parks across the country are hosting hundreds of programs, events and exhibits recognizing the nation’s semiquincentennial, including many at sites connected to the founding of the United States.
