Denville to host Revolutionary War tribute event honoring Battle of Springfield

DENVILLE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Denville Township will host “Light Up The Night” on June 23 as part of the township’s ongoing Semi Quincentennial celebration commemorating America’s 250th anniversary and Denville’s role in Revolutionary War history.

The event is scheduled from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at Flicker Terrace in Denville.

According to township officials, the evening will include a historical presentation by Vito Bianco of the Denville Historical Society focusing on the Battle of Springfield, fought June 23, 1780, in Union County during the Revolutionary War.

Officials said the battle marked the end of British military ambitions in New Jersey and was among the final major engagements of the war in the northern colonies.

As part of the ceremony, beams of light will illuminate the night sky to mark the location where a warning beacon was lit atop present-day Beacon Hill in Denville on June 23, 1780.

Township officials said the beacon was used to warn neighboring outposts of approaching British activity during the Battle of Springfield.

“This event offers our community a meaningful opportunity to honor Denville’s place in Revolutionary War history and reflect on the courage and communication systems that helped shape our nation’s fight for independence,” township officials said.

Officials noted British forces never advanced into Morris County following the Battle of Springfield, effectively ending their New Jersey campaign.

Residents of all ages are encouraged to attend the event, which is part of Denville’s broader America 250 celebration series.
