Driver escapes injury after fiery crash downs utility pole in Sussex County
BYRAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — A driver escaped injury early Sunday after crashing into a wooded area, igniting a fire and bringing down live power lines in Byram Township, authorities said.
Emergency crews from the Byram Township Fire Department, Byram Police Department and Lakeland Emergency Squad were dispatched around 12:30 a.m. to the intersection of Roseville Road and Amity Road for a reported single-vehicle crash with possible injuries.
Responders found the vehicle had left the roadway and come to rest in a wooded area, fully engulfed in flames. The crash also sheared a utility pole, sending live electrical wires across Roseville Road and making the area impassable, officials said.
The driver was able to get out of the vehicle before emergency personnel arrived and was not injured.
Firefighters were initially unable to begin suppression efforts due to the danger posed by the live electrical lines. Jersey Central Power & Light was called to the scene to secure the wires. Once the power was shut off and the scene deemed safe, crews extinguished the vehicle fire.
Units cleared the scene at approximately 3 a.m.
