Elderly driver crashes into garage support column in Hunterdon County

READINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — An elderly driver was transported to a hospital Friday morning after a vehicle crashed into a support column inside a residential garage on Ditmar Boulevard in Readington Township, according to local officials.

Emergency crews from the Whitehouse Rescue Squad responded to the scene after the vehicle struck the structural column, causing damage to the garage.

Officials said the driver mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to crash into the support column.

Due to the structural damage, a building official requested that the structure be temporarily stabilized to ensure safety.

Rescue personnel worked with Readington Township’s Office of Emergency Management to install temporary shoring inside the garage using structural struts to support the affected area.

Once the stabilization system was properly installed and the structure was secured, crews later removed the temporary struts after confirming the area was safe.

The Whitehouse Rescue Squad thanked the Readington Township Department of Public Works for assisting with lumber and additional supplies needed for the operation.

Officials said the driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
