Emergency repairs prompt lane closures on I-287 southbound in Riverdale, Montville

UPDATE: All lanes on I-287 southbound have reopened between Exit 57 (Skyline Drive in Oakland) and just south of Exit 52 (Route 23 in Montville) following the completion of emergency repairs.

MORRIS COUNTY, N.J. — Emergency roadway repairs have led to lane closures in two locations on Interstate 287 southbound in Morris County, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced Tuesday.

The closures are due to concrete buckling caused by the expansion of bridge joints in Riverdale and Montville. The right lane is closed at milepost 52.6, just south of Route 23 in Riverdale Borough. The center and left lanes remain open.

Further south, at milepost 49.3 near the Brook Valley Road Bridge in Montville Township, the left and center lanes are closed. The right lane and shoulder are open, with traffic using the shoulder as a travel lane.

All southbound lanes near milepost 49.3 were temporarily closed around 3 p.m. Tuesday. NJDOT crews made emergency repairs and reopened the right lane and shoulder by approximately 4:30 p.m.

Repair work is ongoing, and there is currently no estimate for when all lanes will reopen. Motorists are advised to use caution, reduce speed, and expect delays in the area.

The timing of the repairs may change depending on weather and other conditions. Drivers are encouraged to visit www.511nj.org for real-time travel updates.
