Enforcement of new trash collection policy begins January 13 in Phillipsburg
PHILLIPSBURG, NJ (Warren County) – Phillipsburg is implementing a new enforcement policy for trash collection, effective Monday, January 13.
This initiative is part of Mayor Piazza and the Town Council’s commitment to improve the safety of municipal Division of Public Works (DPW) employees, ensure consistent refuse collection, and maintain a cleaner, healthier environment for all residents and visitors.
Key changes to the policy include:
- No Loose Bags: Starting January 13, loose bags will not be accepted for collection unless they contain only brush or weeds. All garbage must be placed in a container at curbside for pickup.
- Container Size Limits: Containers larger than 45 gallons or weighing more than 50 pounds may be refused. Residents are allowed a maximum of four containers per dwelling unit.
- Lid Requirements: In some conditions, curbside placement without lids will be accepted. However, all containers must be tightly lidded, watertight, and insect-tight to prevent odors and maintain hygiene.
- Collection Schedule: Containers should not be placed at the curb earlier than 24 hours before the scheduled pickup.
The town will be deploying educational stickers to inform residents about these changes. The Division of Inspections will support enforcement of the town’s Solid Waste and Recycling Ordinance (530-3) and the Phillipsburg Property Maintenance Code (447).
Residents are encouraged to reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns to Patrick Kays at pkays@phillipsburgnj.org. For specific complaints about uncollected refuse, contact Patty Huxta, DPW Secretary, at phuxta@phillipsburgnj.org.
The town will continue to educate the public on these policy updates throughout January.
