Feral cat tests positive for rabies after attacking elderly couple in Warren County

BLAIRSTOWN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Warren County) — An elderly couple was attacked by a feral cat on Tuesday, prompting a response from police, emergency personnel, and animal control. The cat later tested positive for rabies, authorities said.

According to police, officers and the Blairstown Ambulance Corps responded to a residence on Kishpaugh Road in Blairstown Township on October 21 for a report of a cat attacking an elderly couple. Upon arrival, an officer attended to the couple’s wounds and requested assistance from animal control.

Animal Control Officer (ACO) Robert Lagonera responded to the scene and successfully captured the cat, which showed visible injuries to its face consistent with a possible encounter with a wild animal. The cat was transported to the New Jersey State Health Department laboratory for testing, where results confirmed it was positive for rabies.

Officials said the testing was expedited due to the cat’s contact with humans and visible signs of injury.

Authorities noted that the cat was a feral animal the couple had been feeding outside for several years.

ACO Robbie reminded residents to take precautions when feeding or interacting with feral cats. “Be mindful of feeding feral cats,” Robbie said. “Don’t leave cat food out overnight or unattended. Raccoons tend to be carriers and mostly feed at night, and this will help avoid outside cats coming in contact with them.”

Residents are urged to ensure pets are vaccinated against rabies and to avoid handling unfamiliar or wild animals.
