Morris County Correctional Facility passes annual state inspection with high marks

MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — The Morris County Correctional Facility has successfully completed and passed its 2024 inspection by the New Jersey Department of Corrections, Sheriff James M. Gannon announced.

Each year, New Jersey’s adult correctional facilities are evaluated to ensure compliance with state standards concerning physical infrastructure, professional staffing, and the delivery of services. This year’s inspection was conducted over five days by Program Specialist 4 Christel Jackson-Lee.

Cpl. Michael Chereches served as the facility liaison during the inspection, accompanying Jackson-Lee throughout her assessment.

Initial feedback from Jackson-Lee praised the facility’s cleanliness and the professionalism of its staff. She noted the employees’ strong knowledge base and commended their interactions during her evaluation.

The inspection was based on the Manual of Standards for New Jersey Adult County Correctional Facilities, which outlines the legal obligations for the care and custody of individuals housed within the system. Jackson-Lee found the Morris County Correctional Facility in full compliance with all standards outlined in New Jersey Administrative Code 10A:31.

During the exit interview, Jackson-Lee stated, “As always, I came to your agency, and I see the most professional operation one could hope for. The staff, stretching from the Undersheriff to the most inexperienced officer, display the utmost professionalism to not only me, but the inmate population as well. When I interviewed the inmates, they were nothing but complimentary when speaking about this facility, from the food to the cleanliness, and especially medical services, the inmates couldn’t be happier.”

Sheriff Gannon praised the facility’s staff for their dedication.
“I am pleased and very proud of our personnel at the correctional facility,” Gannon said. “They maintain peaceful order in a state-of-the-art facility, all while walking the toughest beat in Morris County. I have no doubt that Warden Chris Klein and his Command Staff will continue to strive in enhancing the performance of our correctional police officers and making improvements in the care and custody of those housed in our jail. The people of Morris County expect no less.”

The Morris County Correctional Facility is part of the Sheriff’s Office’s “Triple Crown” distinction, which includes accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), the American Correctional Association (ACA), and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC). The Sheriff’s Office also holds Highlands Forensics Certification for crime scene processing and evidence management.
