Man accused of shoplifting hundreds of dollars in merchandise from Sussex County ShopRite

FRANKLIN BOROUGH, N.J. (Sussex County) — A Clayton man was arrested in June after police investigated allegations that he repeatedly failed to scan merchandise at a ShopRite self-checkout in Franklin Borough, according to police.

Troy McAlpin, 56, was arrested on the afternoon of June 6 following a shoplifting complaint from the store’s loss prevention staff.

Police said officers responded to the store and were told that a man on the premises had allegedly stolen several hundred dollars worth of merchandise during multiple visits by repeatedly failing to scan items at self-checkout registers.

Officers made contact with the man, later identified as McAlpin, and took him into custody without incident, police said.

Following the investigation, McAlpin was charged with fourth-degree shoplifting.

McAlpin was issued a complaint summons and released pending an appearance in Sussex County Superior Court in accordance with New Jersey’s bail reform law.
