Fifth-alarm brush fire burns about 6 acres in Hunterdon County

EAST AMWELL TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — A fifth-alarm brush fire burned about six acres of field and woodland Saturday afternoon on Wertsville Road in East Amwell Township, according to the Amwell Valley Fire Company.

Firefighters were dispatched at approximately 1:21 p.m. March 14 for reports of a brush fire in a field.

Upon arrival, fire officials reported a rapidly spreading, wind-driven field fire and immediately requested a fifth-alarm brush assignment, bringing additional brush trucks and water tenders from neighboring departments.

Multiple mutual aid agencies responded to assist, along with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

Fire crews worked to contain the fast-moving fire while protecting nearby structures, exposures and livestock on the property.

Officials said the blaze ultimately burned about six acres of field and woodland before being brought under control.

Firefighters remained on scene for approximately four hours before all units returned to service.

The Amwell Valley Fire Company thanked mutual aid partners for their assistance during the incident.

The cause of the fire was not immediately released.
