Fire destroys barn, garage in Hunterdon County

READINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – A barn and an attached garage are total losses following a fire Thursday in Hunterdon County.

On Aug. 22 at around 5:50 p.m. Hunterdon County Communications received a report of a vehicle on fire inside a garage on Pine Bank Road in the Flemington section of the Township, police said.

Upon arrival, police observed a vehicle on fire inside the garage which was attached to a large barn. Nearby workers were trying to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers, however the fire spread quickly to an attached shop area that had several vehicles inside, and hay storage, police siad.

The column of smoke from the fire could be seen as far away as Morris County, police said.

Dozens of firefighters from throughout Hunterdon, Somerset, and Morris County worked throughout the night to put out the fire and continued to extinguish hot spots Friday morning, police said.

The structure eventually collapsed and was a total loss including several vehicles that were parked inside, police said,

The fire is being investigated by the Readington Township Police Department and Readington Township Fire Officials.

“The origin of the fire is believed to be from a vehicle parked in the garage and is not deemed suspicious,” police said.

There were no injuries reported, police said.
