Firefighters, hazmat team respond to propane leak behind Hunterdon County business

LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Emergency crews responded Tuesday afternoon to a reported gas odor on North Union Street after a leaking propane tank created a vapor cloud behind a Lambertville business, according to City of Lambertville Fire District No. 1.

Firefighters were dispatched at about 4:12 p.m. and arrived to investigate the odor, discovering two 100-pound propane tanks in a backyard area of the business. One of the tanks appeared to be leaking, producing a visible vapor cloud.

Fire crews established a command post on North Union Street and secured a water supply while firefighters stretched a hose line to protect the area where responders would be working.

Hunterdon County’s hazardous materials team was called to assist. Hazmat technicians safely flared off the remaining propane from the tank with the uncontrolled leak while firefighters supported the operation.

The second tank was secured and later removed by the gas company.

As a precaution, nearby businesses were checked for any residual gas readings before the area was cleared.

No injuries were reported.
