First responders help horse back on his feet at Hunterdon County barn

WHITEHOUSE STATION, NJ (Hunterdon County) – Whitehouse Station first responders came to the rescue of a horse Sunday evening after the animal was unable to get back on his feet.

First responders from Whitehouse Rescue Squad and Whitehouse Fire Company were dispatched at around 6:02 p.m. for a unique emergency—a large animal rescue involving a 1,500-pound horse named Maggio.

Upon arrival, crews found Maggio unable to stand in a barn loft area. Due to the horse’s size and the location, responders deployed a grip hoist and slings through an opening in the attic. The hoist was secured to the barn’s structural members to ensure safe lifting.

Working carefully, the team lifted Maggio from the rear using the slings and hoist. Once elevated, Maggio was able to reposition his front legs and, with some assistance, successfully regained a standing position.

Veterinarians and the animal’s owners were on scene and took over care following the rescue. All units were cleared from the scene after approximately one hour.
