Florham Park police release video showing erratic driver in weekend DUI arrest
FLORHAM PARK BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — The Florham Park Police Department released a video this week showing one of two DUI arrests made over the weekend, using the footage to warn the public about the dangers of driving under the influence.
Police said the incident began when an officer observed a vehicle drifting over the right fog line and straddling the shoulder on Route 24 West before the video recording began.
In a post accompanying the video, police described the driver’s erratic behavior and questioned how impaired someone would have to be “to use the shoulder as a lane of travel.”
“Now, just wondering out loud here, but how intoxicated do you think you have to be to use the shoulder as a lane of travel? Then are you surprised when the lane ends and you have to go back into the actual travel lane? And, are our lights not bright enough in the darkest of night to stop when expected? Because a lot of people actually comment how bright they are, so it’s confusing…” the department wrote.
Police added that the driver, who was reportedly traveling from New York City to Piscataway, somehow ended up on Columbia Turnpike. “We’re also curious how someone traveling from NYC to Piscataway made it onto Columbia Tpk… well, almost made it!” the department said.
The vehicle was reportedly traveling at about 38 mph in a 65 mph zone before being stopped by officers. The driver was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence.
“Stop drinking and driving before someone else dies!” the department said in its post.
