Franklin Borough Police Department alerts community to recent scams

FRANKLIN BOROUGH, NJ (Sussex County) – The Franklin Borough Police Department is urging residents to stay vigilant and protect themselves from recent scams targeting individuals in our community.

Here are some of the most common scams reported:

  1. AI Voice Cloning Scams: Scammers use advanced technology to imitate the voices of loved ones, often claiming there’s an emergency and requesting money. Always verify by calling the person directly before taking any action.
  2. Fake Tax Refund Offers: With tax season approaching, scammers are sending texts or emails claiming you qualify for a “bonus” refund. The IRS will never contact you via text, email, or social media.
  3. Fake Utility Company Calls: Scammers threaten to shut off your utilities unless immediate payment is made. Legitimate companies will always send written notices first—don’t fall for high-pressure tactics.
  4. Cryptocurrency Investment Scams: Scammers promise high returns on cryptocurrency investments. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Always do your research and avoid sending money to unverified sources.
  5. Phishing Texts and Emails: Watch out for fake messages from banks, retailers, or delivery companies asking you to “verify” your account details. Always double-check by contacting the company through official channels.

Police offer the following tips to help you stay safe:

  • Never share personal or financial information with unknown callers, emails, or websites.
  • Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication on your accounts.
  • Verify suspicious messages or calls by contacting the source directly.
  • Report scams to the Franklin Borough Police Department or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

If you suspect a scam or have questions, contact the police at 973-827-7700, or dial 9-1-1 for emergencies.
